My brother recently wrote on his blog that he can't stand people who use the word "irregardless" in a sentence. His dislike is well-founded simply because "irregardless" is not a word, "regardless of what you think."(His blog address, if you're interested: http://fazzolari23.blogspot.com).
The word "literally" misused in a sentence is where I feel the worm under my skin; but it's not a disdain really, I am all for it because when people misuse it, it's rather funny in some situations.
"I literally felt like a million bucks," might be uttered by a triathlon winner. And what does a million bucks feel like, literally?
Or someone who is stressed out might cry, "I have a mile-long list of things to do, literally." Jeez, that's a long list. Do you roll the paper it is on or fold it? And when you're done, where do you put it?
My favorite misuse of the word literally came from an interview I saw on TV - it was some reality show where the young girl was being interviewed for the job of a lifetime. During the interview, she was asked a series of questions. When she was done, she said, "When they asked me if I ever used recreational drugs, I literally shit my pants!" Hmmmm...really?
My two cents... I crack up every time I think about this girl shitting her pants - every time!
